Terminal San Giorgio launches new smart port gate

The Port of Genoa's Terminal San Giorgio inaugurates a new automated gate designed to ease congestion and improve heavy vehicle access in/out the terminal facilities. Equipped with two 300-metre auxiliary storage lanes and three entrance and two exit lanes, the terminal gate can cater for all commodity sectors, ranging from containers to ro-ro and heavy-lift and oversize cargo.

Covering a 10,000 sqm surface area, the new facility has been designed to dovetail with the new road infrastructure planned by the Port Authority in the basin of Genoa-Sampierdarena to upgrade accessibility to the cargo terminals overland. The new gate system already in place is capable of accommodating over fifty vehicles within the terminal facilities, consequently reducing congestion in the port common user areas during peak traffic.

The new fully automated gate inbound lanes feature smart technologies to allow drivers to go through quickly across the use of sophisticated cameras and RFID readers to identify truck number plates, damage or anomalies, container e-seals and consequently capable of elaborating a wealth of cargo information which can connect in real-time with the Port of Genoa Community System. The new facility, a 3-million euro investment, is scheduled for completion with the installation of a digital information panel to serve all port users.
