Genoa, 29 June 2023 – Details of the new Undersea Road Tunnel were unveiled today at the landmark headquarters of the Port Authority, Palazzo San Giorgio, alongside the announcement that works have officially kicked off following the final approval received from the Commission of the Upper Council of Public Works, the technical board of the Ministry of Infrastructure and Transport, with the go-ahead to Genoa’s large-scale infrastructure project.

Planned retrofitting activities to the Cesare Imperiale Viaduct, the 300-metre waterfront promenade connecting Ponte dei Mille to Ponte Andrea Doria in Stazioni Marittime’s cruise terminal area, accessed by the over 1 million passengers yearly who choose Genoa as a cruise destination, have commenced.

Western Ligurian Sea Port Authority and Per Genova Breakwater Consortium led by Webuild launch the project in the presence of Italian Infrastructure and Transport Minister Matteo Salvini. The Genoa’s New Breakwater is a national strategic project to improve the role of the city, Liguria and Italy in international maritime trade. Also, it is an innovative project unique in the world for its scale, engineering complexity and benefit to the city and country: the new breakwater will be 6,200 metres long and its construction will create 1,000 jobs.

The repair and new building sector in the Port of Genoa is performing strongly and looks to the future. A byword for excellence within the Italian shipping industry and now set to be refurbished and expanded, with the simultaneous reduction in the impact of yard activities on the city.

State-of-the-art technology and know-how made in Genoa, the next-generation cruise ships will be built in the future new mega-drydock under construction in Sestri Ponente. It will rank amongst the largest facilities in the Mediterranean, catering for the construction of high-tech vessels over 350 metres in length and up to 150,000 gt.

Works are underway along Via Siffredi, designated site for the construction of the new Erzelli Station: much more than a railway station, an integrated mobility hub offering fast connections direct from the city centre to the International Airport and the Genoa Research & Advanced Technology Campus on the Erzelli Hill.

Dredging operations are underway across the Ports of Genoa and Savona, with the dual objective to maintain and to deepen the depth alongside quaylines to cater for the arrival of the next generation ultra- large vessels, both full-container and cruise ships. It is essential to remove regularly from the navigation channels the accumulations of sand and sediment deposited by tide and river flows into the sea to ensure safe and easy access to terminal facilities.

21 October 2022 - On a return visit to the Ports of Genoa and Savona-Vado Ligure after 4 years, the European Coordinator for the Rhine-Alpine core network corridor, Pawel Wojciechowski was invited to inspect the infrastructure construction sites underway, central to the investment programme designed to relaunch inland connections between Liguria and Central Southern Europe.

It ranks as the largest caisson to have been constructed to date with this range of equipment by Fincosit, pioneers of the industry: up to 25.6 metres high, 31 metres long, 22 metres wide and weighing up to 9340 tons. The reinforced-concrete cellular caisson was precast on the floating dock Dario, deployed by the company at the service of the breakwater extension in the Port of Vado Ligure.

The Port of Genoa's Terminal San Giorgio inaugurates a new automated gate designed to ease congestion and improve heavy vehicle access in/out the terminal facilities. Equipped with two 300-metre auxiliary storage lanes and three entrance and two exit lanes, the terminal gate can cater for all commodity sectors, ranging from containers to ro-ro and heavy-lift and oversize cargo.

With the installation of the deck, the final highly challenging phases of the on-site delivery of the new Pionieri e Aviatori d'Italia Viaduct, across via Siffredi between Cornigliano and Sestri Ponente, reached its conclusion at 5am Wednesday morning 28 September. By the end of the year, the new facility is scheduled to open to heavy vehicles to/from the Port of Genoa without the weight restrictions prescribed by the previous bridge.

Port security upgrade works continue across the summer to optimise secure access control solutions at the 14 gates across the Port of Genoa. Giano Gate will be closed from 23 August for approximately 30 days for construction works.

Quay reconstruction at the new Control Tower site is completed. Works on the tower are scheduled to go ahead after the closure of the 62nd edition of the Genoa Boat Show at the end of September, to minimise disruptions to the smooth running of the major international event.

As had already emerged from recent discussions, the two groups who had been invited by the Western Ligurian Sea Port Authority to tender for the elaboration of the detailed and executive design and the construction of the new Breakwater of the Port of Genoa, presented their offers by the bid submission deadline of midnight 26 July.

The Italian Minister for Infrastructure and Sustainable Mobility, Enrico Giovannini, inspected the Port of Genoa facilities on board the Coastguards' vessel, flanked by the Port Authority President Paolo Emilio Signorini, the Commander of the Port Admiral Sergio Liardo, the Mayor of Genoa Marco Bucci and the Prefect Renato Franceschelli.

In view of the fact that no bids were submitted by the two groups pre-qualified to present an offer in the call for tender for the implementation of the detailed and executive design and construction of the new Breakwater of Genoa, the Port Authority declares its intention to proceed, in compliance with art.63 of the Public Procurement Code, with the contract award process with the interested parties.

The historic quay of Calata Zingari is set to reopen in August to accommodate the cruise ships in Genoa’s passenger port.

On 27 May the Select Committee of the Public Works Upper Council of the Ministry of Infrastructure and Sustainable Mobility gave the go-ahead to the Port of Genoa's key strategic project for the building of the New Breakwater. At this juncture, the Port Authority is on track to publish, by the beginning of June, the invitation to tender for the executive design and construction works.

The demolition works of the pierhead in the berthing marina along the Levante Waterfront have been completed.

Genoa, 14 January – The Port Authority headquarters of Palazzo San Giorgio hosted the 2022 inaugural press conference “Ports of Genoa (R)EVOLUTION”, an on-site and online event held by President Signorini, Mayor Bucci and Governor Toti who together provided participants with an update on the wide range of major infrastructure projects in progress across the Port of Genoa.

EIB promotes climate action by providing €300 million to finance Port of Genoa expansion

• This is the first EIB operation in Italy for a project co-financed by the government with resources from the Recovery and Resilience Facility Complementary Fund.
• €500 million has been allocated from the Recovery and Resilience Facility Complementary Fund for the Genoa breakwater.
• The EIB support will support the construction of a breakwater, allowing modern cargo ships to access the port safely and upgrading the rail network to facilitate freight transit and reduce road traffic.
• Shore-to-ship electrical connections will also be developed, allowing berthed ships to receive power from the ground-based electricity network, cutting emissions from fuel.

The call for expressions of interest, to invite economic operators to apply to take part in the subsequent call for integrated tenders within the Project of the New Breakwater in the Port of Genoa, goes ahead. The integrated tender groups together the elaboration of the final and executive design and the full construction process and works of the new breakwater in the Sampierdarena basin.

The preliminaries in the construction works of Genoa's former Hennebique grain silos kick off after 50 years in complete disuse. This morning the details of the redevelopment programme of Hennebique, strategically located along the old port waterfront, were unveiled on-site by the Governor of the Liguria Region Giovanni Toti, the Mayor of Genoa Marco Bucci, the Port Authority President Paolo Emilio Signorini, the CEO of Vitali Group Cristian Vitali and the Architect Maurizio Tosi, Director of Starching Milan.

The reconstruction of the Calata Zingari quay in Genoa's passenger port is underway. The works are scheduled to be completed by 2022, with the reopening of the dock and the adjacent area catering for cruise passenger arrivals and departures and vessel handling services.

The redevelopment of Ponte Parodi is underway, an area at the heart of the far-reaching regeneration plan of the prime site which includes Hennebique, the former landmark grain silos of the Port of Genoa, and the construction of a new quay dedicated to cruise passenger traffic.

The integrated tender for the executive design and construction works for the retrofit of the Levante quay and dredging along Ponte San Giorgio has been assigned to the R.T.I. Injectosond Italia.

Technological optimisation of the Vado Ligure rail link safety and signalling systems has been completed.

Project management of the new Breakwater has been contracted to RINA Consulting. Four tenders from the Investment Programme have been awarded in the last week, and an additional three are due to be announced shortly, for a total value of 80 million euros

Today, 30 July, the local authorities signed the Port of Savona-Vado Ligure Masterplan: the signatories featured the President of the Liguria Region Giovanni Toti, President of the Province of Savona Pierangelo Olivieri, the Western Ligurian Sea Port Authority President Paolo Emilio Signorini, and the Mayors of the Town Councils of Bergeggi, Vado Ligure, Quiliano, Savona, Albissola Marina, Albisola Superiore.

Following the meeting held on-site in Vado Ligure, the Vice Minister for Infrastructure and Sustainable Mobility, Teresa Bellanova, continued her visit to the Ports of Genoa, in the landmark building of Palazzo San Giorgio, headquarters of the Port Authority, after a boat inspection of Genoa's multi-commodity port facilities.

During his first official visit to Genoa, the U.S. Consul General in Milan, Robert Needham, together with the Consul for Political and Economic Affairs, Holly Holzer, had the opportunity to inspect Genoa’s port facilities. Accompanied by the President of the Port Authority, Paolo Emilio Signorini, the US delegation visited the passenger port and the container and multi-purpose terminals of the Sampierdarena and Prà basins, onboard the Genoa Mooring Services vessel.
