July port volumes continue to surge, The Ports of Genoa handled a total of 5,586,405 tons in July 2021, a sharp increase of +22.4% compared to the corresponding period of the previous year Whilst container shipping continues to perform strongly, with 244,000 TEUs handled In July, pushing the growth rate of the first seven months of 2021 to +18.7% on 2020 and an impressive +4.2% rise on the comparable period in the pre-pandemic era of 2019. Following an initial negative start to the year, as of April 2021 mineral oils in the Ports of Genoa returned to growth, corroborated by a +44.1% rise recorded in July month-on-month. Whilst chemical product handling activities reached a total of 40,000 tons, (+1.4%), and liquid food bulk increased by +7.5%, registering a total of 38,000 tons. Industrial activities also performed strongly, posting a +86.4% advance on July 2020. In addition, passenger shipping continues to show gradual signs of recovery, with a July passenger throughput of 458,941, up +57.8% on last year's corresponding period, but still far behind the volumes reported in 2019. Specifically, the Genoa and Savona cruise terminals reported over 66,000 passengers in July, an improvement on the previous year, although still lagging behind the 185,000 passengers registered in July 2019. Ferry passenger traffic surged by +35.1% on July 2020, with a total of 392,685 passengers, pushing the growth rate of the first seven months of the year to +40.8% compared to 2020, for a total of 745,642 ferry passengers, but a setback of -38% on 2019.
