The Ports of the Western Ligurian Sea continue to grow in the first ten months of the year, despite a slight dip in volumes reported in the month of October. This is in line with the trends registered overall in global trade which, although buoyant, is showing signs of slowdown as issues such as the scarcity of electronic components and port backlogs worldwide begin to strain supply chains and weigh on trade in particular areas.
In October 2021 the Ports of Genoa, Savona and Vado Ligure handled a total of 5,211,709 tons, a contraction of -0.3% on the corresponding period of 2020 and down -4.9% on 2019, although in the first ten months of the year total tonnage increased to 51,664,691 t., up +11.2% on 2020. Box throughput decreased, by -3.8% month-on-month compared with 2020 and -6.8% with 2019, to a total of 213.690 TEUs. Full container gateway export volumes suffered the most severe setback, falling to 87,435 TEUs (-9.9% on 2020 e -8.3% on 2019), whilst imports continue on a path of recovery with a +7.7% advance on 2020 and a slight dip of -3.3% on 2019. Nevertheless, overall, container traffic in the first ten months of the year jumped to a total of 2,350,365 TEUs, a +15.1% advance on 2020 and +4.4% on pre-covid 2019.
The conventional general cargo sector, composed of ro-ro and specialised traffic, rose to 1,332,257 tons (+2.7% and -0.9% on October 2020 and 2019), consolidating the upward trend reported since the beginning of the year, with a total of 12.5 million tons handled from January through to October, a +14.5% increase on the comparable period of 2020, but below the throughput level recorded in 2019 (-3%). Mineral oils are up by +7.2% on October 2020, but -7.7% down on 2019, with 1,581,607 tons; whilst chemical products and liquid food bulk continue to grow compared to October 2020 (+13,1% and +126.9% respectively) and to October 2019 (+46% and +83.4% respectively). The solid bulk industry shows signs of recovery across the first ten months of the year, with the Ports of Genoa, Savona and Vado posting almost 2.1 million tons, a 23.1% advance on the previous year, notwithstanding the -27.2% contraction registered month-on-month.
The cruise and ferry ports reported a total of 272,870 passengers, a +218.6% increase on October of the previous year, but still lagging behind pre-pandemic 2019 (-34.2%).
