The Ports of Genoa (Genova, Pra’, Savona and Vado Ligure) consolidate their role as Italy’s pre-eminent port range in terms of total traffic, product diversity and economic output in the first year under the governance of the Western Ligurian Sea Port Authority. 2017 has been a record year: 69 million tonnes of all types of cargo (+8.5%) and 4.2 million passengers, shipped by over 9,000 vessels, confirm the Ports of Genoa’s leadership in a global shipping industry characterised by carrier upsizing and mega liner alliances.

The rapid increase in container traffic registered by all terminals, over 2.6 million TEUs (+13.3%), has firmly established the Western Ligurian Sea’s port range as the premier Italian and Mediterranean gateway serving the leading industrial and consumer centres of Northern Italy and Southern Europe. Transhipment accounts for only 14% of total box traffic.

The ro-ro sector, which registered 13 million tonnes (+14.5%) in 2017, also performed strongly, bolstered by the constant growth in Motorways of the Sea traffic handled by the terminals of Genoa and Savona. Although certain components of breakbulk traffic experienced a slowdown, the sector showed an overall increase of over 10% and rose to 14 million tonnes.

The bulk traffic sector also posted good results. Liquid bulk, which consists primarily of petroleum products, exceeded a total volume of 15.5 million tonnes. Whilst chemical products rose steadily by 5.3%, compared to the previous year, and registered 500,000 tonnes.

The solid bulk sector reported a 14.3% advance over the previous year, a total of 6 million tonnes, with imported mineral commodities registering a 20% growth rate to reach 560,000 tonnes. Although foodbulk experienced a slight downturn, the terminals dedicated to the handling of cereals and flour registered a volume of over 440,000 tonnes, consolidating the Ports of Genoa’s role as a key link in the Northwestern Italian industrial heartland’s supply chain. The solid bulk sector was bolstered by imports of material used for construction purposes, 1.1 million tonnes, which has also been employed in the major infrastructure projects underway in the port.

Genoa and Savona have emerged forcefully as a market leader in the cruise port industry, second-ranking in Italy and amongst the top cruise ports in the Med, with a passenger throughput of over 1.7 million.

As the Ports of Genoa benefit from a strategic geographical location and state-of-the-art passenger and baggage handling facilities, the major cruises liners have elected to homeport from Genoa and Savona, offering a wide variety of itineraries across the West Med. Nevertheless, the two ports have also developed into thriving transit ports for visits to the fascinating historic cities of Genoa and Savona or for excursions to the spectacular Italian Riviera.

With over 2.4 million ferry passengers handled in 2017, the Ports of Genoa, Savona and Vado Ligure boast a wide range of ferry services throughout the year to the islands of Sicily, Sardinia and Corsica, in addition to a selection of destinations in Spain, Malta and North Africa.
