This morning the Italian Prime Minister, Mario Draghi, met with senior local government authorities and members of the Ports of Genoa shipping community in the historic landmark building of Palazzo San Giorgio, headquarters of the Port Authority, following an inspection of the port facilities by boat.

Genoa, 14 January – The Port Authority headquarters of Palazzo San Giorgio hosted the 2022 inaugural press conference “Ports of Genoa (R)EVOLUTION”, an on-site and online event held by President Signorini, Mayor Bucci and Governor Toti who together provided participants with an update on the wide range of major infrastructure projects in progress across the Port of Genoa.
In November the Western Ligurian Sea Port Authority reported a 6% growth rate in total cargo throughput compared to the corresponding month of 2020 (up +10.7% from January-November) and a slight dip of -0.2% on 2019 (down -5.5% on the first eleven months of 2019).
The construction works on the expansion of the airport passenger terminal facility have kicked off. The final design, approved last year by the Italian Civil Aviation Authority (ENAC), foresees the development of a new 5,500 sqm terminal on three levels and the refurbishment of the existing building, with a specific focus on the check-in and departure lounge. The works are scheduled to be completed in two years.
The Ports of the Western Ligurian Sea continue to grow in the first ten months of the year, despite a slight dip in volumes reported in the month of October. This is in line with the trends registered overall in global trade which, although buoyant, is showing signs of slowdown as issues such as the scarcity of electronic components and port backlogs worldwide begin to strain supply chains and weigh on trade in particular areas.
EIB promotes climate action by providing €300 million to finance Port of Genoa expansion
- This is the first EIB operation in Italy for a project co-financed by the government with resources from the Recovery and Resilience Facility Complementary Fund.
- €500 million has been allocated from the Recovery and Resilience Facility Complementary Fund for the Genoa breakwater.
- The EIB support will support the construction of a breakwater, allowing modern cargo ships to access the port safely and upgrading the rail network to facilitate freight transit and reduce road traffic.
- Shore-to-ship electrical connections will also be developed, allowing berthed ships to receive power from the ground-based electricity network, cutting emissions from fuel.
The Western Ligurian Sea Port Authority President, Paolo Emilio Signorini, illustrated the Port of Genoa 2.3 billion-Infrastructure Investment Programme during the fourth edition of the International Conference "A Sea for Switzerland 4", hosted in Lugano on 24 November.
The call for expressions of interest, to invite economic operators to apply to take part in the subsequent call for integrated tenders within the Project of the New Breakwater in the Port of Genoa, goes ahead. The integrated tender groups together the elaboration of the final and executive design and the full construction process and works of the new breakwater in the Sampierdarena basin.
The documentary video, produced in collaboration with TeleGenova, focuses on the large-scale reconversion of the former Hennebique grain silos, a masterpiece of industrial architecture located in the heart of Genoa's Old Port Waterfront alongside the Cruise Terminal and the University of Genoa.
