The expansion of the Genoa Sestri Ponente shipyard forges ahead. The 430-million project foresees the construction of a new mega drydock, the extension of the outfitting pier, the addition of a high-load capacity yard and a range of complementary and public utility services. The engineering works currently underway represent a decisive step in boosting the productivity of the shipyard to equip it in the construction of larger vessels, that combine both craftsmanship and innovation.
At the heart of the project is the installation of the 400-metre long and 60-metre wide drydock, with a depth alongside of approximately 15 metres, which can cater for newbuilds up to 380 metres in length and 50 metres in width. The new layout of the expanded area will accommodate the entire manufacturing cycle of the wide variety of manufactured items deployed in shipbuilding, the production of semi-worked articles and assemblies, followed by outfitting, sea trials and the final launch of the vessel out at sea. The overall project is a feat of sophisticated engineering and the complexity of the planned works requires the dedication and commitment of a qualified team of engineers and highly skilled workers. The refurbished 313-metre outfitting pier is on track to be concluded by January 2026, whilst the entire facility, which will showcase as one of the largest in the Mediterranean, is on schedule for completion by the second half of 2027.
The Sestri Ponente shipyard is the focus of a range of major infrastructure projects designed to consolidate Genoa's leadership in the shipbuilding industry worldwide, whilst simultaneously incorporating new levels of technology in sustainability and safety.
