The Western Ligurian Sea Port Authority welcomed the Consul General of Austria in Milan, Wolfgang Strohmayer, accompanied by the Honorary Consul, Peter Ploederl, at Palazzo San Giorgio during a four-day official visit to Liguria, promoted by the Liguria Region with the support of Liguria International.
The meeting provided the delegation with a unique opportunity to gain an in-depth insight into the large-scale infrastructure projects currently underway in Genoa, including the construction of the New Open-Sea Breakwater. A guided site-inspection by boat further underscored the strategic role of the Italian port at the crossroads of global maritime trade.
During the bilateral discussions, a focus was placed upon the near completion of the Terzo Valico hi-speed/hi-capacity rail link, instrumental to boosting direct rail freight services between the Ports of Genoa and Savona-Vado and the major manufacturing and consumer catchment areas of Central Europe, including Austria. The project is expected to contribute significantly to the development of sustainable mobility and intermodal transport across the European Union.
The visit concluded with a guided tour of Palazzo San Giorgio, a landmark building dating from 1260, which stands at the heart of Genoa’s maritime and financial heritage, and has served as headquarters of the Port Authority since 1903.
