The visit to Singapore of the Italian Deputy Minister for Infrastructure and Transport, Edoardo Rixi, and the Western Ligurian Sea Port Authority President, Matteo Paroli, continued with an onsite inspection of PSA Tuas Port, the most advanced automated port project in the world, followed by a meeting at the official residence of Italy’s Ambassador to Singapore, Dante Brandi.
During the course of the visit to the Tuas Megaport, the Italian delegation observed operations at the facility’s state-of-the-art control centre which oversees the automated container handling systems, powered by electric vehicles, integrated digital platforms and centralised operational planning. Scheduled for completion by 2040, the terminal stands as a benchmark for the future evolution of the major global maritime hubs.
“Amid the rapid expansion of global trade, the pioneering Tuas container terminal clearly recognises the need to respond to and anticipate the escalating demands of today’s supply chain industry, offering a clear indication of the direction in which ports must develop in the decades ahead,” declared the Ports of Genoa President, Matteo Paroli. “The integration of infrastructure, automation and digital systems represents the foundation of operational efficiency and port sustainability.”
The visit to Singapore aligns with the far-reaching transformation underway across the Ports of Genova, Pra’. Savona and Vado. This programme is bolstered by the combination of the 3.6 billion euro public capital plan and the sizable private investment programmes, aimed at infrastructure development and technological innovation.
“We are laying the foundations within our ports to cater for future growth, driven by the quality of investment and technological development,” Paroli added. “Competitiveness does not depend solely on the availability of land, but on the capacity to organise existing space more effectively across modern infrastructure, efficient connections and advanced cargo operating systems. The Ports of Genoa operate in a complex urban environment, which requires close and continuous collaboration with our private terminal operating companies and shipping lines. Technological innovation enables us to increase throughput volumes, optimise traffic flow management and reduce emissions and disruption to the urban fabric, thereby minimising overall environmental impact.”
The Italian delegation was also received at the official residence of Ambassador Dante Brandi to discuss the strategic role of Italian ports within global supply chain networks and to explore prospects for enhanced economic cooperation between Italy and Singapore in the logistics and port infrastructure sectors.
The visit was preceded by the signing of a strategic agreement between the Western Ligurian Sea Port Authority and PSA Italy. The agreement provides for investments of one billion dollars on the part of PSA in the PSA Genoa Pra’ terminal, focused on infrastructure upgrades and the introduction of advanced technological systems, including Automated Stacking Cranes (ASC) and fully electric vehicles.
