The new Costa Firenze, inspired by the sublime beauty of Florence, the cradle of the Italian Renaissance, was presented on 2 July in the Port of Savona ahead of her maiden voyage of 4 July, as a symbol of rebirth and a new departure towards more sustainable tourism.
The debut of the new Italian 135,000-gt Costa Firenze, designed and built by Fincantieri, offering a capacity of up to 5260 guests and 1100 crew, was presided over by the President of Costa Cruises, Mario Zanetti, and by the Mayor of Florence, Dario Nardella. The Ports of Genoa and Savona-Vado Ligure reported a sharp increase in cargo throughput of 41.2%, compared to May of the previous year, 5,643,117 tons, whilst total tonnage reached 5,899,955. In addition, the Port Authority sets a new monthly record in box traffic, registering a total of 260,323 teus, and displayed fast growth in both import and export container handling numbers, posting a +9.2% rise on 2019 of the pre-pandemic era
Palazzo San Giorgio, headquarters of the Western Ligurian Sea Port Authority, provided the spectacular backdrop to the ceremony marking a change of command at the helm of the Liguria Maritime Authority and of the Port of Genoa, with the handover from outgoing Admiral Nicola Carlone to the newly appointed Rear Admiral Sergio Liardo.
