20 May 2025 – The Commissioner of the Western Ligurian Sea Port Authority, Admiral Massimo Seno, welcomed in his opening address Consul Kumar, who presented guests with the impressive data on the ongoing expansion of India’s economy which, with an annual GDP growth rate of over 6% and a current population of 1.4 billion (over 50% under the age of 29), is expected to overtake Germany as the world’s third largest economy.
The Consul General chose Genoa and the Region of Liguria for his first official public presentation for a precise reason: bilateral trade with Italy continues to flourish and the Ports of Genoa represents the leading Italian logistics gateway for import/export exchange between these two major manufacturing countries. In fact, almost half of maritime trade between India and Italy is handled by the terminal facilities of the Ports of Genoa and Savona-Vado, whilst, alongside the Ligurian Port of La Spezia, volumes exceed 60% of the total.
The local establishment and shipping community expressed their deep appreciation of Consul Kumar’s address, and all parties confirmed their joint commitment to strengthen relations between both nations, bolstered by forthcoming Government free trade agreements which are expected to double maritime traffic to/from India and Italy.
Supported by the Port Authority’s 3-billion euro major infrastructure investment programme, and allied with a range of rail and inland logistic zone projects underway, the Ports of Genoa and Savona-Vado are on track to consolidate their strategic role in this new phase of relations between Italy and India.
