Total tonnage handled by the Western Ligurian Sea Port Authority terminals in the first quarter of 2025 has been bolstered by container throughput, which registered a +11.4% advance on last year to 6,827,060 tons, and by solid bulk traffic which rose by +26,1% to 688,799 tons. Box volumes jumped by a +8.6% on 2023 and by +10% on 2024, thereby pointing to a consolidation of the trading patterns already recorded in the course of the previous year, generated above all by the global shipping alliance and supply chain reshuffles, and which boosted transhipment traffic by +107.3% on last year’s comparable period. The disruption caused by the Red Sea crisis, which has prompted carriers to divert vessels from the Suez Canal to the Cape of Good Hope, has, in fact, bolstered this segment of container shipping, above all, along the eastbound/westbound routes, in the aftermath of the great reshuffling of liner alliances at the start of 2025. In terms of gateway volumes, full container traffic increased by +6.4% on the first quarter of 2024, firmly establishing the Ports of Genoa’s position as centre of cargo handling excellence serving the prosperous Northern Italian manufacturing and consumer centres.
Whilst the conventional cargo and mineral oils and energy product sectors reported a downturn respectively of -8.2% (3.214.468 tons) and of -8.5% (4,401,448 tons).
Finally, the total passenger count at the Ports of Genoa and Savona-Vado registered a contraction of -6%, compared to the corresponding period of the previous year. However, the number of cruise ships remained stable at 47 calls on the first quarter of 2024.
