Maghreb viewed as key strategic partner: the Ports of Genoa conclude official visit to Morocco

The Ports of Genoa and Savona-Vado consolidate their position in Northwest Africa at the heart of the Mediterranean, following an official visit to Casablanca and Tangiers, organised in cooperation with the Chamber of Commerce, Promos Italy and Morocco Desk. The long-standing relations of Genoa with Morocco, one of Italy’s vital strategic partners in the Mediterranean Sea, continue to evolve across key sectors.

Morocco is experiencing a period of strong economic growth, bolstered by sizable industrial investment programmes designed to boost its leading role as logistics platform in Africa. Within this framework, the Ports of Genoa – premier maritime gateway between Italy and Morocco, with over 70,000 TEUs handled in 2024 and steady growth registered in ro/pax volumes – aim to upgrade further the liner services connecting the Ligurian hub with the strategically positioned North African country.

In Casablanca the delegation, led by the Western Ligurian Sea Port Authority and bringing together a select group of shipping operators of the port cluster (Tarros, GNV, Messina, Finsea, Lanza International and Circle Group) met with the Agence Nationale de Ports, the freight-forwarders’ associations ATADM and AFFM and the Moroccan association of exporters ASMEX. The visit provided participants with the opportunity to explore new forms of collaboration to boost imports and exports and to build increasingly integrated supply chains between the two countries. The trade mission proceeded to visit Tanger Med, the Mediterranean and Africa’s leading port in terms of container traffic, to examine, in addition, prospects for growth across the ro/pax sector and other areas of mutual interest. The discussions confirmed the long-standing trade links between Italy and Morocco, and the opportunities to capitalise upon the great potential offered by new services, improved cargo flows and closer cooperation between the respective vibrant port clusters.

The bilateral meetings scheduled in Morocco forms part of a range of activities, organised by the Western Ligurian Sea Port Authority in conjunction with the Chamber of Commerce, dedicated to the promotion overseas of trade and market access to the Ports of Genoa and Savona-Vado, with a specific focus on the expanding Mediterranean economies.
