The increase was bolstered above all by the +74.7% surge recorded in transhipment traffic, specifically at Vado Ligure, but also driven in part by gateway volumes, with a 14.5% rise in imports, albeit a -3.8% decline in exports, on the previous year. Containerised traffic held up well, advancing by +3.9% in tonnage, to a total of 13,698,021 tonnes.
However, statistics released point to a mixed picture in other cargo segments. The two commodity segments which account for almost half of the Ports of Genoa’s total freight throughput, that is, mineral oils/energy product sectors and conventional cargo, reported a downturn respectively of -7.6% (9,015,386 tonnes) and -5.9% (6,781,078 tonnes) on last year’s comparable period, with the latter sustaining the impact of a substantial reduction in the volume of trailers and motor vehicles moved. Whilst the upward trend continues across the solid bulk sector, up by +8.7% on the first six months of the previous year, to 1,291,901 tonnes and, in the liquid bulk segment, vegetable oils and wine performing strongly with an advance of +13% on the corresponding period of 2024.
Finally, the total passenger count at the Ports of Genoa and Savona-Vado rose by +3.1% in the first six months of 2025, with an increase in cruise traffic of +5.5% to 1,050,688 and ferries stable at 759,364 passengers.
