Total throughput at the Ports of Genoa and Savona-Vado in the first half of 2026 dips to 31.1 million tons (-1.9%) compared to the corresponding period of the previous year, whilst container gateway traffic rises by +1.6% and conventional cargo by 6.2%.
Against a backdrop of continuing international geopolitical uncertainty, which has a persistent impact upon the viability of key maritime routes and supply chain costs, the Ports of Genoa remain resilient and posted 31.1 million tons of total cargo in the first six months of the year, in line with the corresponding period of 2025. However, the overall figure reflects differing trends across the diverse commodity segments.
Container volumes rose to 772,534 TEUs in the second quarter (April-June 2026), up by +1%, with gateway traffic accounting for the largest share and inextricably linked to the demand from the Ports of Genoa and Savona-Vado’s catchment area, and registering a +5% gain on the 2nd quarter and +1.6% increase over the first six months of the year. Full containers in import advanced by +8.1% across the 2nd quarter and by +6.3% in the first half of the year, whilst total full containers to/from the hinterland rose by +5.7% in the 2nd quarter and by +2.1% over the six-month period. Transhipment, by contrast, declined by -16.4% in the second quarter and by -21.3% in the first half of 2026, following the strong growth recorded in 2025. Overall, container traffic between January and June 2026 stands at 1,450,155 TEUs, down by -2.7% on the corresponding period of the previous year.
Positive signs were registered across rail freight traffic in terms of TEUs. The number of trains increased by +5.3% in the second quarter, compared with the same period in 2025, in line with the rise in gateway volumes. The Regions of Lombardy and Veneto recorded respectively increases of +12.6% and +11.8%, and together accounted for almost 70% of all containerised rail services with the hinterland.
Conventional cargo performed strongly, up by +7.2% in the second quarter of the year, and by +6.2%, to a total of almost 6.7 million tonnes, in the first six months of 2026. Growth was bolstered above all by ro-ro traffic, with gains posted by both the Ports of Genoa and Savona on last year’s comparable period.
Total passenger count reached 1.8 million in the first half of the year at the Ports of Genoa and Savona, a slight dip of -0.4%. Cruise passengers reached 1,078,699, an increase of 2.7%, whilst ferry traffic declined by -4.7% to 723,642 passengers.
