The Ports of Genoa: a surge in traffic in the opening months of 2018

The Ports of Genoa and Savona-Vado handled 11 million tonnes of cargo during the first two months of 2018, a 5.2% gain on the corresponding period of the previous year.

2018 is poised to be another record year for the Ports of Genoa as traffic continues to grow. The container port sector registered a 10.6% increase, a total of 431,595 teus, on last year’s comparable period. Conventional cargo also performed strongly, reporting a 5.4% advance on the previous year. Specifically, ro-ro traffic grew by 8%, 2 million tonnes compared to the 1.8 million tonnes handled in 2017. Whilst the solid bulk terminals posted a 7.3% advance on the corresponding period of the previous year.
The passenger sector experienced a slowdown, an 11.6% decrease compared to 2017, with a total passenger count of 232,201. The Cruise Terminal in Savona registered a reduction of 37%, whilst Stazioni Marittime’s cruise passenger throughput in Genoa grew by 4.8%; ferry traffic showed a 6% decrease on last year’s comparable period.
