New Port Papa Bridge, winner of the OICE 2023 Awards

Nominated best road infrastructure project, the Papa Bridge wins one of the 16 prestigious awards promoted by the OICE, the Association of Consulting Engineers and Architects, member of Confindustria (Confederation of Italian Industry).

The jury of the first edition of the OICE Awards, composed of 15 representatives from the public authorities and industry sector, applauded the state-of-the-art design of the new facility, at the heart of the wide range of major roadworks underway in the Genoa-Sampierdarena port basin to upgrade overland accessibility to the cargo terminals.

The Papa Bridge has been commended for the overall innovative technology deployed in its design and construction. It ranks as the first bridge in Europe and amongst the top 6 in the world to have been built on two multi-lane levels, across a single 100-metre span weighing 2,000 tons. The total bridge is 200 metres long, 35 metres high per 3,800 tons in weight.

The bridge was delivered and installed on-site last May, completed in less than 36 hours in a complex and challenging operation across the Polcevera River. The inauguration of the lower deck is scheduled for the forthcoming month of September, whilst the upper deck is due to open in 2024, and is a key element in the new layout of the smart dedicated multi-lane heavy vehicle roads in the Genoa-Sampierdarena basin, set to ease simultaneously both inner port and urban traffic congestion.

The redevelopment of the port road infrastructure is part of an overall far-reaching plan to improve access by sea, road and rail to the Port of Genoa's cargo terminals to cater for the increase in volumes forecast upon completion of the construction of the New Open-Sea Breakwater and to consolidate the Ports of Genoa and Savona-Vado as the leading European modern logistics platform across the Mediterranean.
