Vado Gateway is a deep-sea container terminal in the Port of Vado Ligure, operated by APM Terminals Vado Ligure Spa, an Italian company owned by APM Terminals (50.1%), Cosco Shipping Ports (40%) and Qingdao Port International (9.9%).
The terminal capitalises upon the competitiveness of the Ligurian and Italian port network, providing a new connection between the markets in Northern Italy, Switzerland, Germany and North Eastern France and the rest of the world and representing one of the Med gateways of the “New Silk Road”.
Landside, APM Terminals moves 30% of container volumes by rail, thanks to 10 rail links from Vado Ligure to intermodal centres in Northen Italy (including Milan and Padua).
The operations take place along a quay length of 700 m, offering a total capacity of 900,000 TEUs/year.
Thanks to a quay depth of 17.25 m and quay height of 4.5 m above sea level, Vado Gateway can accommodate the latest generation container vessels.
The terminal ranks among the most advanced in the Med Sea, combining the highest performance and safety standards.
The stacking yard operations are fully automated thanks to remote controlled ARMGs which ensure the yard is completely unmanned during operations.
Unloaded containers data are identified by cameras installed on the Ship-to-Shore gantry cranes, and transferred to the Terminal Operating System which is equipped to locate in real-time the position of each container in the terminal.
Container transfers from the quay to the yard and the exchange grid are operated by human driven hybrid straddle carriers, coordinated by the TOS.
Truck access to Vado Gateway is easy thanks to an advanced web-based appointment system allowing drivers to book in advance their arrival slot: they will then be automatically identified when transiting through the terminal gate (14 reversible lanes) by an optical scanner able to read the truck plate and the container code.
APM Terminals Vado Ligure also manages the adjoining Reefer Terminal, the main Med Sea hub for fruit logistics, enhancing the selection of services offered to international clients.
