The Port Security Office of the Western Ligurian Sea Port Authority is responsible for security surveillance and control in the port areas of Genoa-Pra' and Savona-Vado Ligure, and authorised to enforce strict security standards across a full range of actions, initiatives, measures, and interventions. The office collaborates closely with other Public Administrations for the protection of the ports which are considered critical national assets.

Specifically, the Port Security Officers of Genoa-Pra' and Savona-Vado (designated by decree of the local Maritime Authority) undertake to prepare and update the Risk Assessment Report, the subsequent Security Plans for common user areas, the security evaluations regarding terminals and port facilities, and to coordinate the Port Facility Security Officers. Based on the security evaluations, they monitor control measures to deter potential illegal activities targeting vessels, terminals, operators, passengers and cargo.

The port gates, staffed by personnel from highly accredited surveillance companies, are equipped with a state-of-the-art video surveillance system that monitors 24/7 the port area, borders and basins of seawater From the Security Control Room, officers can intercept in real-time major maritime security breaches and provide information to assist the elaboration of a focused response, in collaboration with the Police Force and Maritime Authorities, namely the Harbour Master’s Office, Prefecture, Maritime Border Police, Fire Brigade, Carabinieri.

The Port Authority, in compliance with national and EU requirements in terms of digitalisation, has made sizable investments to upgrade access procedures at the port gates across new gate automation systems. These actions are part of a pledge to simplify access protocols, aimed at enhancing the capability to track and automate port entries, in accordance with national and international regulations on maritime security.

Real-time monitoring of transits through the port gates not only improves the level of efficiency of security, but also boosts the intangible management of port access, resulting in a more sustainable and seamless management of the flow of freight and passengers alike.

Access to port gates requires specific authorisations and permits for Genoa-Pra’ and Savona-Vado Ligure.

Investments in human capital, along with investments in advanced technologies, provide for a comprehensive management of all security-related processes, alongside the pursuit of innovative solutions to tackle the daily challenges in the field of port security.

The control and monitoring of the port gates also facilitate, due to recent funding and the know-how and experience of the Security Office, the advancement of regulatory governance of mobility, for both vehicles and pedestrians, in line with the Port Security Plan and the Port Masterplan.
