The new Calata Bettolo Container Terminal, with a 750-metre linear quay, 180,000-sqm terminal area and a 550,000 TEU/per annum capacity, is the focal point of one of the major infrastructure projects underway in the Ports of Genoa – Sampierdarena Basin.

The management of the new facility has been assigned to Consorzio Bettolo, 65% majority stake held by Itatermineaux (MSC) and 25% by Seber.
The direct role assumed by MSC, the world’s no.2 container shipping line, in partnership with the stakeholders of the adjacent Calata Sanità terminal operating company, represents a major asset in the range of new port handling services on offer which cater for the new market requirements and are poised to strengthen Genoa’s position as centre of cargo handling excellence.
Consorzio Bettolo’s sizeable investment programme underlines the strategic importance of this new terminal development which is set to increase the competitive profile of the Ports of Genoa, with specific focus on the Sampierdarena basin.
Plans are afoot to install six quayside cranes, for a total investment of 50 million euros, in addition to Automated Stacking Cranes and straddle cranes for a further 49 million euros. Consorzio Bettolo plans to provide a full range of handling equipment for the stacking area, the on-site rail facility and the customs inspection area for a total of 136 million euros.

Calata Bettolo container terminal will, therefore, offer port users a state-of-the-art fully automated facility.
Container terminal operations will be programmed to guarantee an optimization of port productivity levels, maximum safety and security levels, optimal use of storage space and a rationalization of loading/unloading operations with positive repercussions on easing congestion of road freight traffic flows.

Based upon the data outlined above, the business plan sets forth an annual 750,000-TEU target for the entire Calata Sanità-Calata Bettolo area, as the MSC group and the Sanità terminal operating company join forces to manage the new box facility.
