Following a European tender procedure, on 29 June 2026 the Western Ligurian Sea Port Authority Management Committee awarded the rail shunting services of the Ports of Savona and Vado Ligure to MERCITALIA Shunting & Terminal S.r.l., part of the Ferrovie dello Stato Group. The contract will run for five years, with an option to extend it for a further two years.

The operation of the shunting services will also be integrated with rail traction services, under a coordinated shunting and traction operating model, supported by the FS Group’s national rail network and by Mercitalia’s logistics and terminal facilities. This integrated approach is designed to consolidate freight shipments by rail to and from the Savona-Vado terminals, whilst providing added opportunities to increase intermodal traffic. Maximum charges have been set for shunting operations to ensure that short-haul rail transport remains competitive, by leveraging efficient last-mile operations and short-distance connections.

MERCITALIA Shunting & Terminal S.r.l. is also responsible for the management of the railway equipment and the control and signalling systems across the Savona-Vado’s port railway infrastructure. The company operates the two electric locomotives owned by the Western Ligurian Sea Port Authority, which have been made available for the provision of the service.
